NOAA records wind in knots, converted here to mph. Most speeds are estimates; measured gusts are marked. “None listed” means NOAA gave no dollar figure. From 2022 it left the damage field blank for most events here, so a blank does not mean nothing was damaged.
Where does this storm record come from?
NOAA’s Storm Events Database, downloaded 17 October 2026. NOAA has published data only through June 2026. The 25 July 2026 storm comes from the National Weather Service office in Sioux Falls.
What were the worst storms to hit Sioux Falls?
For hail inside the city, 2013 and 2014. On 31 August 2013, hail up to 2.5 inches broke windows and damaged siding, roofs and cars across Sioux Falls. One dealer reported 4,000 vehicles damaged. The National Weather Service called it one of the worst hailstorms in the city in a decade, and NOAA put the damage at $5,300,000.
Then 5 June 2014: hail up to 2 inches across Sioux Falls, Hartford and Harrisburg, with damage to vehicles, windows, roofs and siding. One news report dates it 4 June. After the spring 2014 hail, city reshingling applications passed 6,000, against a usual 2,100.
For wind, 10 September 2019. Three EF2 tornadoes hit south Sioux Falls and Tea at night, tearing roofs off apartment buildings near 41st and Glendale and near O’Gorman High. Eight people were hurt and no one died. The fire chief counted at least 37 structures that collapsed or had structural problems. The warning came after two of the tornadoes had already lifted.
The biggest stones fell on 5 August 2021: 3.5 inches, 5 miles north of Sioux Falls at 8:50 pm. That hail caused significant roof damage on a path from south of Dell Rapids through Renner to near Brandon.
2022 brought both. The 12 May derecho, which NOAA listed as a billion-dollar disaster, tore roofs off a Hartford truck stop and a Canton building and blew shingles off homes west of the city. The Weather Service measured 78 mph 3 miles south-southwest of Sioux Falls and 88 mph near Salem. Two people died in South Dakota. On 29 May, hail up to 2.5 inches fell overnight on western Sioux Falls. The city issued more than 5,000 shingle permits that year.
The two most recent were wind. The 28 July 2025 derecho hit hardest south and west of the city, with 87 mph measured near Irene and a roof torn off a house near Davis; in Sioux Falls the damage was mostly trees and power lines. On 25 July 2026, gusts reached 81 to 82 mph at Tea and Harrisburg and 72 mph at the airport, with some roof and structural damage across the metro.
What does the record say about hail and wind?
Big hail comes from spring to early fall. Every hail event in the table fell between 5 April and 11 October. Of 269 NOAA hail reports in the four counties from 2015 to June 2026, 72 came in May and 63 in August.
It also skips years. Since May 2022, NOAA has logged no hail bigger than 1.75 inches in Minnehaha County, through June 2026. We found no Sioux Falls hail storm in 2025 with widespread roof damage.
Wind fills the gaps. NOAA thunderstorm wind reports in the four counties reached 50 in 2021, 80 in 2022 and 51 in 2025, and derechos crossed the area in 2022 and 2025. A quiet hail summer can still take shingles off.
What should I do after the next storm?
Write down the date and take photos the same day. A dated photo ties the damage to that storm when you talk to your insurer.
Then go through what to check on your roof after hail or wind and get a roof inspection with dated photos. Read how a roof claim works in South Dakota before you call the insurer, and check the roofer’s city license before you sign anything.
