Roofing in Garretson, South Dakota

What did the 2015 windstorm do in Garretson?

It was the worst storm in town in NOAA’s records since 2010. The 22 June 2015 winds, estimated at 100 mph after conversion from NOAA’s knots, damaged several homes, destroyed at least one and tore parts of the roofs off others. Barns, silos, grandstands and the town elevator were hit too, and NOAA put the damage at $1.5 million.

A roof put on after that storm is about 11 years old now.

Garretson gets other wind. An estimated 64 mph gust blew the roof off a barn on 12 August 2010, and the 23 April 2022 high wind peaked at 72 mph measured in the area. NOAA logged 1 inch hail in 2011, 2014, 2022 and 2023. The same 2015 storm reached Baltic, and the full list is in the area storm history.

How old are the houses in Garretson?

Old. The median Garretson house was built in 1973, by the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey of 600 homes, and 20.7% predate 1940. Only 15.9% went up in 2000 or later.

The mix is wider than in most towns nearby. Detached houses make up 58.8% of homes and mobile homes 8.0%. Owners hold 62.7% of occupied homes, so more than a third are rented.

The median owner-occupied value was $203,800, plus or minus $29,674.

Is Garretson growing?

No. The Census estimate put Garretson at 1,174 people in July 2025, down from 1,228 in the 2020 count. Permit data shows no new homes from 2015 to 2021, then 3 to 7 a year since 2022.

Does Garretson require a permit to reroof?

We could not confirm it. Garretson’s code has a building permit and fee section that prices permits by the square foot and values a homeowner’s own work at three times the cost of materials. We saw that only in a search summary, because the code page blocked us, and nothing in it says whether a reroof counts.

Call the city at 605-359-2341, the number on the state’s Dakota at Home listing, and ask about the permit and any contractor license. One warning: garretsonsd.com is a parked domain for sale, not the city’s site.

The Sioux Falls roofing license covers Sioux Falls city limits only. Whoever you hire, run the basic checks on a roofer.
